Michael Kamen is an associate professor in the Department of Education. Dr. Kamen has been at Southwestern University since 2002. He came to Southwestern from Auburn University where he taught for eleven years and was Associate Professor and Elementary Prgram coordinator. Prior to receiving his doctorate from the University of Texas, he taught elementary school for 10 years. Dr. Kamen's teaching interests center on conceptually-based, hands-on elementary school science and mathematics, environmental education, educational technology, progressive pedagogy, and innovative practice. He promotes the integration of language and other curriculum areas through science inquiry and supports an emphasis on environmental education. Dr. Kamen's current research interests follow three lines: (1) innovative elementary science classroom practice including the use of creative dramatics and active assessment, (2) environmental education, and (3) the role of language in science learning.
