[PreReq: FRE11-124] [DIV-Hum] This composition course examines the development of French cinema, a key component of France's cultural renown. Building on the textbook Septième Art, it will guide you toward improved writing in French by presenting films' historical and cultural contexts, by explaining the language of cinema, and by inviting detailed analysis of this art form. Both popular and avant-garde works are featured, ranging from silent classics to the 1960s Nouvelle Vague hit À bout de souffle to contemporary explorations of French and European identity. On successful completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate a critical appreciation of French film since 1900 and familiarity with advanced-level essay methodologies including analysis, structure, and specifics of grammar and vocabulary.
