Psychoanalysis Case Study #3: Mercedes (Cycle 2)

This particular shot is not only an example of Psychoanalysis but also Semiotics.

In this shoot the models presented different myths and stories in the photo. In this case, the photo clearly refers to the myth of Adam and Eve. It is evident because of both models are nude and the female model defiantly holds an apple. Mercedes is shown nude but elaborately body painted. The model even has a snake painted on as part of her outfit, which only solidifies that the image is referring to the biblical myth. By taking all of these elements together to help formulate the visual objects meaning, the image is a syntagmatic one, or that the meaning is gained through the connections between the signs depicted (Rose, 84). Mercedes is wearing a headdress; which puts the focus on her strong facial features and implies that her character is powerful and dominant. She is a signifier of a strong female and she is the central focus and stands out due to her position in the shot and the bright colors.

Although she represents power in the photo, this image is still representative of Psychoanalysis. The female is still being gazed at not only by the viewer but also the male model in the shot. Her pose is sexual; her back is arched, her breasts jut forward, and her butt is angled outward. The combination of these things are all what is considered sexy in American patriarchal society.
