As made clear on the previous page, there are many people who are very unhappy with the KONY 2012 campaign. I know I am one of the few that is very anti-KONY 2012. There are better organizations, such as Enough, to donate your time and money to if you are passionate about helping children in need.
Remember the truth claims we discussed early? How strong they were with the use of home videos and a strong use of ethos? The audience is betrayed. KONY 2012 did such an effective job convincing the audience with how honest, real, and dire the situation was that people are angry and upset. Plus their use of the symbol of the fourth estate, which was once powerful, by the people, and for the people is now completely distrusted. According to Gregory Shaya in Lapham's Quarterly Round Table, the fourth estate was once, "the guardian of truth, the watchdog of power, the foundation of democracy-in brief, the fourth estate-lies at the heart of the liberal imagination of the west." This trust in the press is gone as the media has continues to betray the public. Later, Shaya declares the effect of the media today: "it is no wonder that so many attribute enormous power to the media, not to inform, enlighten and uplift, but to mislead audiences, to close off discussion and buttress authority, to hide the machinations of power, to control readers and viewers." Jason Russell and KONY 2012 have successfully provided a case that proves that we can no longer trust the fourth estate, as they are trying to implement the hypodermic needle model, just filling the country's mind with lies, hoping no one does their research. The commenters that are selects have posted things that indicate they are angry, they see through the lies, they know there are ulterior motives going on behind the Invisible Children. |
