Language Learning
Part I
You will be learning one modern language and one old language as a
basis for comparison to the concepts we are learning in the course.
The "modern language" will be chosen from Python,
Ruby or
Lua with the
restriction that you must not already have written anything in the
assigned language.
Two students will receive the same language. You are free to
trade languages with another student but at the end of the first class
you will have a language to learn!
Obviously, the first program will be to write "Hello, World"
to
the screen or as output to the console. You should be able to
demonstrate the program on the projector in the classroom either by
bringing you laptop or showing a screen capture from your dorm computer.
Be sure your program contains attribution comments!
Part II
Ch2: Find an example of "Hello World" in COBOL, FORTRAN II, PL/I,
BASIC and ALGOL. Be sure to label what version of each
language it is in. You will be assigned one of these
languages as your old language" exemplar for the semester.
