The way the female characters' anatomies are drawn is a significant part in the hyper-sexualization of female characters in comics, anime/manga, and video games.
In general, animated females are drawn in very limited styles, often with small and 'delicate' body parts.
The female characters in these three mediums though are drawn with the same slender or extremely thin waists and other 'delicate' features (delicate chins, mouths, and noses), but they have the addition of very large breasts that often defy gravity.
Female breasts are probably one of the most sexualized body part of the female body. For comic books, manga/anime, and video games, boobs are the main focus of the female body when she is being drawn. These animated females often have giant balloon boobs that defy the very laws of physics. By 'defying the laws of physics', I am talking about how the boobs can be the size or larger then the character's head, yet they never seem to droop down. Despite their size and the situations (or positions) the boobs in these three mediums stay in place. Unless of course it is the animators believe the audience would find it sexy if they moved or jiggled about. In anime, a lot of the female characters' breast move independently from one another and from what the female character is actually doing. That movement is often accompanies with a song, I can only describe as a 'jiggling' or 'bonging' sound. Often female characters are put in situations that are humiliating or degrading. In these situations the female character loses her clothes and gets embarrassed about it. Yet, everything they still do is 'sexy, even if the female is shown to be pain (emotional or physical). |
A 'snake body' or 'snake torso' is when a female characters body, most often her torso, is elongated. The character's torso is stretched beyond what the proportion of her torso should be, in relation to the rest of her body. Females are drawn this way, to give them a appearance of being long and thin look. It also allows the creator to show more skin, because there is more skin to show. This is most often found in American comic books, but can be found in the other two mediums. I am mentioning it, because I as a long time reader and fan of superhero comic book have never actually notice this. So for me personally, it was jarring to realize that the way female torsos are often drawn is eerily similar to a snake. |
A lot of fans argue that this is not really the animators' fault; it is simply a product of how our whole society objectifies the female form.
So every time someone draws female breasts, people are going to see it a 'sexy', because that is how we our trained to see female breasts.
While I do not completely disagree with opinion, the way females are drawn goes beyond just having (although ridiculously large) breasts.
The female body is sexualized beyond reason, throughout society, but animators of these three mediums specifically emphasis the sexual parts of the female body.
Anatomy plays a large part in the hyper-sexualization, but it is from exclusive. A big breasted woman can appear completely unsexualized in a specific position or with a certain expression on her face. Meanwhile a flat-chested woman can be highly sexualized. Though most positions that are meant to be 'sexy', are often the ones made to show off the female's breasts or her ass, or in some cases both. One of the most well known sexually explicit and ridiculous body positions, creators draw their female characters, is known as the 'boob and ass shot'. This is a position that female characters are often drawn in; their body is twisted in a way so that both their breasts and butts are promptly facing the audience. |
The image on the left is the popular superhero, Wonder Woman (DC comics) fighting a villain. Her waist is rather slim, but her butt and breasts are quite large and prominent. Wonder Woman's spine would have to be broken, for her to be in that position. The image on the right is from Ice Revolution Manga. Ice Revolution is a series targeted to girls of a young age, while Oosawa Masaki breasts and butt are not as large as Wonder Womans', she still is in the same broken position to show off the front and back of her body. The top part of her body actually looks disconnected from her lower half. The 'boobs and ass shot' has become so common place, that is even appears in series that are not even targeted for young men. |
Another common body position, female characters are often drawn in, is what I am going to call the 'broken back'. The broken back also shows the female character's breasts and butt, but in this case her back is bended so backwards that her spine would have to be broken in half. While, these are animated drawings and they are meant to be exaggerated forms of the human body, animated men are never drawn in these positions. In fact the left bottom image, is from the the comic book issue, where the villain Bane actually broke Batman's spine (and Batman was temporarily dead). The image shows the act of Bane bending and breaking Batman’s spine. It looks quite painful and is not that 'sexy', despite the fact both men have prominent and well define muscles. All of the females above; are in positions where their backs are far more bent backwards than Batman's back, yet their backs are still intact. Some people argue that this is because Bane is breaking Batman's back across his knee. The bottom right image; is Wonder Woman having her back being violently punched, by Captain Atom. Her back was nowhere near broken and once more it is still further bent backwards than Batman's back. Comparatively the two positions are near identical, expect Wonder Woman's breasts are thrust upward and slightly toward the audience, as well as her butt. |
So while male characters, can be drawn in visually appealing ways and even objectified. It does not come close the way female characters are drawn or objectified. |
