Discoure Analysis: Statements From The Girls

Discourse analysis is, "centrally concerned with the production of social difference through visual imagery" (Rose 169), will also be a helpful tool in analyzing images as well as text from the biography on the show entitled, "Up Close and Personal with the Stars of the Hit TV Series: The Girls Next Door" by Paul Ruditis. The book contains quotes from the girls themselves as well as from Hugh Hefner describing their perception of the show, as well as discussion of their own personal lives as "Playmates" living full time in the Playboy mansion.

Discourse analysis refers to a wide range of images and text and explores how these images and text construct specific views of the social world. It also addresses questions of power/knowledge, because power does not exist without knowledge, and knowledge cannot exist without power as well (Rose 144). In this section, I will analyze direct quotes from The Girls Next Door, and show how these quotes provide knowledge that helps shape how our society is understood.
