VIDDY

Viddy.com allows users to showcase videos that they have uploaded from their smartphones. One prominent difference between this tech startup and the ones which were previously mentioned is that its primary function is performed on the user’s phone, instead of the website itself. Videos can be edited (although this is limited) and shared via the mobile application or the website. It is yet another example of the ‘next big thing’ taking hold of the tech startup industry, and following Instagram’s example, the editing feature for clips taken with Viddy has proven to be exceptionally helpful in that endeavor. As Rachel Metz points out in her article from Technology Review, “Free video-sharing apps like Viddy and Social-cam have quickly gained users who are clamoring to make little flicks on their phones and send them to friends online. With this in mind, I reviewed several of these video apps. The best ones let you give your videos a creative edge by adding effects such as filters and background music.” (Metz, 2012)

Viddy is obviously another application based on entertainment. Its homepage offers the never-far-off ‘Sign in with facebook’ option, uses cool and relaxed color tones, and even exhibits a tranquil scene being shot with the huge image of a smartphone. It even invites the viewer with the suggestion to ‘Join Viddy’ in large print across the top right of the page. Although the image above does not fully emphasize this, the homepage is actually quite a bit more extensive than what first meets the eye. The four rectangular images at the bottom of the page are actually the top parts of the first of a long list of videos which had been posted by users that day. Visitors do not need to sign in to watch the videos, but are prompted to create an account at the end of each one. All of this adds to the engaging yet still relaxed atmosphere of the website.

Viddy.com would not be able to exist without its mobile application. This is no doubt why the website homepage features a large image of its use in action through the medium of a smartphone. The caption at the top of the sign in page for the mobile app encapsulates the same feeling as the website, saying ‘Turn everyday moments in the perfect little movies.’ It is an excellent marketing strategy for a product that wants its users to have fun while operating it, and makes it clear to the viewer that it was not developed for people who are looking to gain any sort of capital from its utilization.
