Conclusion

In 1991, it was reported that "Barbie accounted for half of Mattel's 1.4 billion dollars in sales… [and it was] observed that Barbie seems forever young and forever popular. She is the toy world's version of Coca-Cola'" (Rogers 88). Twenty years after these numbers were crunched, Barbie continues to break the cliché that "nothing lasts forever." It appears that this doll's popularity will never die, that her influence on culture is as ageless as her plastic physique. Barbie has an extremely large fan-base, which helps her influence the culture she resides in and become an icon.

Though Barbie is often applauded as the first adult doll for girls and as a symbol of female empowerment, she is also criticized for the negative ideologies which she dwells among in order to keep hold of her influence. Barbie perpetuates hegemony in many forms, and it seems that she will continue to do so long as she reins as the most beautiful and popular doll in America.
