Gyula Halasz went by the pseudonym "Brassai," which means "from Brasso." His images capture the Paris
city at night. While the images may not have always captured a moment showing human action, they
showed human life. A city called by many the "city of lights", Brassai captured through mist and rain.
The lights brought to a life all their own. Brassai described Paris as a "world of pleasure, of love,
vice, crime, drugs (Winkler)." However, his images were not things to cringe and be afraid of. In
true street photography fashion, Brassai showed people in life. He captured them in a moment and
such a way that you see them and give a sly smile. This was the nightlife, and this is what he
captured without a second thought.
