Traveling across America Robert Frank captured images of Americans in a post-war society. Most images tend to be somewhat forlorn and melancholy. His composition added to his message. Many of his shots were out of focus and taken at odd angles. His story of America is not of romance and fairytales like Brassai and the Paris nightlife. However, he does not elect pity for his subjects either. These are images of what he found on the road across America in the 1950s. At this time there existed an ideology in the American cultural wealth and class, Frank chose to highlight the realities of racial and class differences that existed. Through his use of lighting, cropping and unusual techniques he contrasted the norms.
